Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special licence to drive one of your motorhomes?

No, all you need is to have held a full standard UK driving licence for at least 2 years, and you must be between 21 – 79 years of age. See below for full details.

Do you impose a mileage limit on your motorhomes?

No, we offer unlimited mileage on all of our hires. The vehicle will be provided with a full tank of diesel, and we simply ask that you also return the motorhome with a full tank.

Can we bring our dog with us in your motorhome?

Yes you can, we charge £25 per dog per hire – please let us know the number and the size of any dogs that you will be bringing when you are booking, so that we can ensure that the motorhomes are suitable to accommodate them. As a rule of thumb we advise that no more than 2 dogs could stay in our motorhomes, although 3 smaller dogs may be acceptable.

Will I be shown how to use everything in the motorhome before we set off?

Yes, you will be given a detailed handover of where everything is and how everything works before you leave. However, you will also be emailed a detailed Welcome Pack before your hire, which will include a link to various ‘How-To’ videos, providing full instructions on how to use all of the equipment, and make the most of your hire.

We highly recommend you acquaint yourself with this information ahead of your hire, so that you are well prepared for your trip.

I would like to hire a motorhome for 4 nights, is this possible?

Yes you can, for short breaks we have a 2 night minimum hire. We try to be as flexible as possible to accommodate your needs, so for short or long breaks please contact us with your requirements and we will give you a bespoke quote.

Booking Your Motorhome

How much is it to hire a motorhome?

Our pricing model is very simple – all of our motorhomes have the same rental rate, regardless of which van you choose, or the number of people on your booking.

All you need to do is select the dates you wish to hire the motorhome for, and any optional extras, to see how much your motorhome hire will be.

You can see full details of our availability and pricing HERE>>>

Who can drive your motorhomes?

Anyone between the ages of 21 – 79 with a full standard UK driving licence can drive our motorhomes, as they all weigh less than 3500KG.

For people with an international driving licence, you can also drive our motorhomes if you have a driving licence that is valid in the UK, for vehicles up to 3500KG.

If your driving licence is not in English, you will also need to provide an International Driving Permit, issued from your own country, in English.

Please see further FAQs below if you are aged between 21 – 25, or have points/endorsements on your licence, for our Insurance Criteria.

Insurance Criteria

Your motorhome hire includes your insurance cover for 1 x named driver, for the duration of your hire.

Additional drivers can be added to your booking for an extra £25 per person.

Only named drivers are permitted to drive the motorhome, otherwise your insurance will be invalid.

Insurance is permitted to named drivers between the age of 21 and 79, who have held a full driving license for a minimum of 24 months, no exceptions.

Two, 3 point convictions are acceptable (i.e. 2 x SP30s, 3 points each), to a maximum of 6 points. However,  single convictions totalling 6 points or more, or multiple convictions totalling more than 6 points will need to be referred to our insurance company for approval.

Visitors from abroad will require a current driving license within the same parameters.

Drivers can have no more than one fault or non-fault claim within a 5 year period, and this must be declared when providing your ID/documentation.

We must also be informed about any drivers with any medical conditions that would normally need to be declared to the DVLA. You can find full details about which health conditions might need to be declared HERE>>>

Any points, endorsements, claims or medical conditions that are not disclosed prior to collection of the motorhome will result in the motorhome insurance being invalid, and you will liable for the full amount of any claim for the motorhome and/or any third party damage.

The hirer will indemnify Cumbria Motorhome Hire against any personal or third party losses outside the terms and conditions of the Insurance policy.

Drivers must agree to drive obeying the Highway Code at all times.

Drivers must agree not to drive the vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The Vehicle is insured for damage to the Vehicle and the property of a third party, but does not include any personal insurance for the customer (including death or bodily injury to the driver), or cover any personal possessions.

In the event of any damage to either the vehicle or third party property, the hirer will be liable for the first excess. The hirer will also be fully liable for all overhead damage, any damaged deemed as gross negligence, and replacement or repair of windows and windscreens, or tyre damage.

Excess charges are as follows:

Aged 21 and 22 – £1000
Aged 23 and 24 – £750
Aged 25 upwards – £600

This will be taken in the form of a damage deposit by credit/debit card, on the day of collection, then returned back to the card within 7 days, subject to their not being any damage to the motorhome or any third party vehicle.

What ID and documentation do I need to provide?

As required for our motorhome insurance cover, we need to verify your identity, and that of any additional drivers.

Please read the following very carefully, as we cannot release the motorhome to you without all of the relevant ID/documentation being provided, and some of the information may have been updated.

We need to see the documentation for ALL NAMED DRIVERS in advance of your hire by email, in order to check you have everything you need, and ensure there are no delays on the day. We will then just need to see your driving licence and passport (if you have one) on the day you collect your motorhome.

2-3 Weeks Before Your Motorhome Hire Start Date

Prior to your motorhome hire date, please can you provide the following ID/documentation detailed below by email.

This can either be a photograph of your ID and proofs of address, OR a pdf file of a bill or statement downloaded from an online account.
(Most utility companies, banks etc will let you download a pdf of your latest bill/statement from your online account. Simply save it to your computer/device, then attach it to the email).

PLEASE NOTE – SCREENSHOTS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED

Please can you ensure the images are clear and easy to read, and show your full name, address, and date the document was issued, then attach the files as an attachment, as opposed to ‘inserting’ the images into the email – this will help us to process your ID/documentation much more quickly and efficiently.

ALL documentation MUST be in the same name and address as that on your Driving Licence, and be dated as ISSUED within 90 days of the start of your motorhome hire!

DVLA Code

Please visit the link below from the DVLA to generate a code for the person(s) driving the motorhome, in order for us to do a Driving Licence check.
To generate your DVLA code, you will need your Driving Licence number, national insurance number and post code where your licence is registered to. This is case sensitive, so please copy it correctly.

Please email this to us within 21 days of the start date of your motorhome hire. It will not be valid before that.

Also send the last 8 characters of your driving licence.

Proof of ID/Address

If you are the main person who will be driving the motorhome, you must provide 2 separate documents showing your name and address, and be dated as issued within 90 days of the hire date (this is the date the actual bill/statement was generated, not the date period that it covers). They must also be from the same address as your Driving Licence.

Primary – we need at least 1 of the following:

Electricity
Water
Gas
Broadband/landline phone
Mortgage statement
Polling card
HMRC self assessment/tax credit
Bank/credit card statement
Council tax statement
TV licence

Secondary – if you don’t have 2 of the above, we can accept 1 of the following as your second proof of address:

Student loan statement
Shotgun licence
Payslip
Mobile phone bill
Pension statement
Car finance statement
Loan statement
Property deed

In addition you must also provide a photo of the following identification:

– Photocard Driving Licence – front and back
– Passport or other photo ID (if you have one, if not, we will need to take a photo of you)

Additional Named Drivers will also need to provide the following:

– 1 proof of address with their name and address, from the primary group only, as above
– Driving Licence – front and back
– Passport/photo ID – if they have one
– DVLA Code

Please note – all named drivers will need to be present when collecting the motorhome, and will need to sign a copy of the Rental Agreement and Booking Terms and Conditions, which we will provide.

If anyone drives the motorhome without having had prior approval from us and their ID/documentation checked, your insurance will be invalid, and you will be liable for the full cost of any damage or third party claims.

Please email these documents to us 2-3 weeks before your hire date. They are purely for identification purposes only.
